Just set the multimeter to the DC voltage setting (usually symbolized by a straight line and a dashed line) and connect the probes to the output terminals of the adapter. The reading should be close to 24V. If it’s way off, then your power adapter might be faulty, and you’ll need to replace it.
Also, check for any visible signs of damage on the power cable. Look for frayed wires or broken connectors. If you find any damage, that can prevent the power from reaching the LED strip lights. Just replace the cable if it’s damaged.
Step 2: Inspect the LED Strip Lights
Once you’ve confirmed that the power source is okay, it’s time to look at the LED strip lights themselves. First, check for any physical damage. Look for cuts, tears, or bent parts on the strip. Sometimes, the strip can get damaged during installation or handling, and that can disrupt the electrical circuit.
If you find a damaged section, you can try cutting it out and re – connecting the strip. But make sure you do it right. You need to use the right connectors and soldering materials if you’re soldering. And always make sure you turn off the power before you start working on the strip.
Next, check the LED chips on the strip. Look for any that are burnt out or not lighting up while the others are. If you find a few burnt – out chips in a row, that could indicate a problem with that section of the strip. You might need to replace that part of the strip.
Step 3: Examine the Connectors
Connectors play a crucial role in getting power to the LED strip lights. Check all the connectors between the power adapter and the LED strip, as well as any connectors used along the strip if you’ve extended it.
Make sure the connectors are firmly attached. Loose connectors can cause a poor electrical connection, which means the lights won’t get enough power or might not work at all. If a connector seems loose, try pushing it on more securely.
Also, look for any signs of corrosion on the connectors. Corrosion can happen over time, especially if the lights are used in a humid environment. If you see corrosion, you can try cleaning the connectors with a small brush and some contact cleaner. Just be careful not to get any cleaner on the LED chips.
Step 4: Check for Short Circuits
A short circuit can really mess things up for your LED strip lights. A short circuit occurs when the electrical current takes a shortcut, bypassing the normal path through the LEDs.
To check for a short circuit, you can use a multimeter again. Set it to the resistance setting (usually symbolized by the Greek letter omega, Ω). If you suspect a short circuit, carefully inspect the strip for any places where the copper traces might be touching each other. This can happen if the strip is bent too much or if there’s some debris on it. If you find the source of the short circuit, you can try to fix it by separating the traces or removing the debris.
Step 5: Consider the Installation
Sometimes, the problem lies in how the LED strip lights were installed. Make sure the strip is installed on a flat and clean surface. If it’s installed on a rough or dirty surface, it can cause problems with the electrical connection.
Also, check the spacing between the strips if you’ve installed multiple strips. They need to be spaced properly to avoid overheating and other issues. And make sure the strips are properly grounded if required.
Step 6: Check for Overheating
Overheating can cause the LED strip lights to stop working. Check if the lights feel unusually hot to the touch. If they do, it could be a sign that they’re being overloaded or that there’s a problem with the ventilation.
Make sure the LED strip lights are not covered or blocked. They need proper ventilation to dissipate heat. If you’ve installed the lights in an enclosed space, consider adding some ventilation holes or using a fan to cool them down.
